While there are many great things concerning the renewable source of energy known as wind power, it is not a perfect medium. There are many pros and cons to wind energy.
Pros of Wind Energy
- Wind power is considered a ‘green’ energy source. This is because wind energy does not cause as much harm to the environment as traditional fossil fuels, clean coal or nuclear energy. While wind power is not without it’s own negative environmental impacts it is a much cleaner alternative
- Wind power is available in most locations and over 50% of theUnited Statesis suitable for harvesting wind power. In many cases this is not always cost effective, but it is possible.
- Wind energy is renewable and is, in some ways, unlimited. While current production in a specific region can be impacted by weather patterns we have no control over, you will never run out of wind power in the long term. That is, unless there is no wind… Which would be a much bigger problem!
- Individuals can harness the power of wind energy for their own homes or businesses. As our understanding of wind power has increased there are many do it yourself kits that can help you build a homemade wind turbine.
- Wind power can help individuals and small communities become energy independent. This works for those who would like to live “off the grid” as well as those who would like to lower their monthly electric costs by implementing wind power. Since wind power is not reliable it is wise to think of wind energy as a secondary source of power.
Cons of Wind Energy
- Large scale wind farms are very expensive. The expansive growth in the wind power industry has been funded by subsidies and grants that are paid for by tax payers. While DIY wind energy users can find more cost effective ways of generating power, the large scale wind farms are not yet able to expand and operate without government aid.
- Wind turbines are not friendly to birds. Many birds die when they fly into the giant spinning blades of wind turbines.
- Wind power is unpredictable because it relies on uncontrollable wind patterns.
- Giant wind turbines generate an irritating and loud noise. Many people who live in close proximity to large wind turbines suffer from headaches from the noise. Keep in mind that small wind turbines that you can make for your own home won’t have this problem.
The sustainability and cost effectiveness of wind power as a national (or statewide) power source is still being debated. However, as technology improves the cost of building and maintaining wind turbines is decreasing every year.
